Arnold, Howard, Quinn and Rice lead list of winners at 16th Indy Fall Classic NATIONAL OPEN
10/16/2007

The North Central Division closed out its 2007 racing season with over 600 entries on hand for the 16th annual Fall Classic National Open at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis with a group of veterans and first time special event winners getting into the winner’s circle including seven-time Division 3 champion Jerry Arnold.

Arnold, who along with crew chief Ron Bohn qualified second, defeated Greg Kamplain in

the Competition eliminator final with a .634 under 8.02.  National Open and other non-points events do not carry permanent CIC adjustments.  Kamplain took out Rick Brown’s record setting B/TA S-10 in the semi-final while Arnold took a single on the other side of the ladder.

Monte Howard at the wheel of Ken Shawver’s ’78 Firebird captured the Super Stock title with a dead-on 10.430 as Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 Nationals and Mac Tools U.S. Nationals winner Brandon Wilkerson red lighted with his Art’s Used Parts SS/AA Corvette.  Jeremy Duncan was the lone semi-finalist.

M.J. Quinn took the Stock eliminator final over first time finalist Bob Lindley.  Quinn was nearly perfect on the tree with a .008 reaction time to Lindley’s foul start.  Former division champion Steve Sullivan was the lone semi-finalist, red lighting against Quinn.

Greg Rice captured his first NHRA Jegs Super Quick victory topping newly crowned Division Champion Dean McIlvain in the final with a 4.721 on his 4.72 dial-in.  Rice’s victory moved into a tie for seventh place in the final Jegs Super Quick point standings.  McIlvain was one of eight racers with a mathematical shot at the division championship which he secured with a fourth round win over recent Jegs NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals Top Dragster winner Jeff Hurst.  See a related story on this site for Jegs Super Quick results.

A pair of Kentucky racers collected their first NHRA Wally’s with Michael Shelton taking the Super Comp final round win over Brian Shockley and Jeffrey Mitchell defeating Randall Warford for the Super Gas crown, while Paul Richardson edged out Gregory Crawford for the Super Street title.

Rounding out Sunday’s winner list was Brent Smith from Ft. Wayne who defeated Cody Nott of Indianapolis for the Jr. Dragster honors.

Casey Beckmeyer from Granite City, Ill. topped Chris Wheatcraft from Jamestown, Ohio in the seventh and final round of Saturday night’s Super Pro bracket while local Avon resident Danny Black defeated Kelly Large from Ross, Ohio in the Pro/Sportsman bracket.

Brian Oakes of Williamstown, NJ took both the heads up Top Super Stock and Top Stock titles with his two ’69 Camaro’s.  Oakes out ran Kenny Schindler in the Top Super Stock final with low E.T. 9.016 to 9.052 and in the Top Stock final used a hole shot to upset number one qualifier Jason McCormack.

The season’s top qualifiers, based on points, in the JEGS Super Quick Series met for the annual JEGS Super Quick Shootout on Saturday with Mike Bagley scoring his first Shootout victory.  Bagley was nearly perfect on the tree with a .001-reaction time holding on for the win with a 4.575 at 146.21 mph to Thomas Smith’s 4.524 at 156.52 mph charge.
