Bureski takes inaugural NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout

9/24/2012

Daryl Bureski captured the Inaugural NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout at the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals at National Trial Raceway.  From being drawn as one of two wildcard entries Bureski wheeled his Stock eliminator ’70 Oldsmobile Cutlass into the winners circle with a final round win over James Monroe’s supercharged Top Dragster.

Monroe patiently waited for his 3-second delayed start then blasted by Bureski's Cutlass at the finish line, but broke out by a measly .001-seconds.   Kevin Pepera photo.

Bureski from Elgin, Ill. was like a David among a field of Goliaths as he took out Craig Sullivan’s Top Dragster entry in the opening round and took a close double breakout win over JEGS Allstar Super Street champion Ricky Shipp in round two.  He then edged Dan Olding’s Super Stock entry in the semi-finals before facing Monroe in the final.

The final pitted Bureski’s stocker, the slowest car in the field against Monroe’s dragster the quickest and fastest.  Bureski had a 3.02-second handicap lead with Monroe blasting by Bureski at the finish line by more than 70 mph, but breaking out by .001 seconds with a 4.119 on his 4.12 index dial-in.  Bureski picked up $2,500 from Moser for his win along with the inaugural Moser Sportsman Shootout event trophy.

Racers from Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Dragster and Top Sportsman qualified through a season long points competition with the top two Moser points seeded into the field.  Two randomly drawn entries from an online registration program with Moser Engineering rounded out the 16-car field.  To level the playing field for the wide variety of NHRA sportsman classes involved the race was contested on the eighth-mile with a full countdown starting ‘Tree.  Racers selected their individual dial-in index for the handicap starts and breakout eliminations.

Points to qualify for the 2013 NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout in the North Central Division will start with the season opening NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis next spring.
