Two events, two wins for Thacker at National Trail Raceway

Sunday

HEBRON, Ohio – Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Marty Thacker raced to his second NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series win of the weekend today at National Trail Raceway just outside of Columbus, Ohio. The Robinson, Ill., resident outran Mike Kosky of Cuddy, Pa., with a lap of 5.533 seconds at 261.88 mph in the final round match up. Thacker also took the win in yesterday’s rescheduled event that was rained out in Norwalk, Ohio, back in May. Thacker also beat Kosky in that final-round matchup.

Bobby Martin won the Funny Car title on Saturday for the make-up event but fell short today to former NHRA North Central Division Champion Mick Snyder. The Demotte, Ind., racer clocked in at 5.755 seconds at 252.28 mph to hold off Martin of Beaver Falls, Pa., with a 5.780, 254.18 mph run.

The win was Snyder’s first of the year in the North Central Division while Thacker’s was his third in four final rounds.

Five Ohio racers made final round appearances but Brian Sexton of Arcanum, Ohio, was the lone winner taking out Jeff Brooks in Super Comp. Bill Yates of Johnstown, Ohio, lost to Ricky Adkins of Milam, Mich., in the final of the division’s Dart Top Sportsman class while Brad Zaskowski of Belmont, Mich., held off Dayton, Ohio, resident Dave Layer in Super Stock.

In Super Gas it was Dave Klomps of Brucefield, Ont., beating Tom Dimond of Dublin, Ohio, and Tennessee racer Jeff Goodman won over Damien Hazelton of Ottawa, Ohio, in Super Street.

Jason Coan went to his third final round this year in Comp Eliminator taking home his second win running 8.294 seconds at 154.56 in the quarter mile, and Troy Williams drove to a 7.468 second, 175.85 mph win in the Spitzer Race Cars Top Dragster class.

Rounding out today’s winners was Grace Howell driving a ’94 Camaro to the win over William Belanger in Stock Eliminator.

North Central Division racers head to Beech Bend Raceway Park for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, August 22-24.

Saturday

HEBRON, Ohio – National Trail Raceway hosts an NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series double header this weekend for racers in the NHRA North Central Division.   First on tap are eliminations for the rained out B’Lasters Cavalcade of Star event originally scheduled at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk Ohio.  These eliminations will take place during qualifying and time trials for the National Trail Raceway Lucas Oil event which will conduct eliminations on Sunday.

In the Top Alcohol Dragster and funny car classes it was Marty Thacker and Bobby Martin picking up both the No. 1 qualifying positions and more importantly the wins from the rescheduled event.

Thacker took out Mike Koskey with lap of 5.518 seconds at 257.87 mph in the final round after grabbing the No. 1 qualifying spot with a pass of 5.482 seconds in Friday’s qualifying session which was quick enough to hold on through Saturday’s qualifying.

The Robinson, Ill., resident grabbed his second win of the year and is followed by Noah Condo of Monticello, Ind., in the second spot and reigning Lucas Oil National Champion Bill Reichert in the No. 4 position behind Ken Perry who sits in third.

Martin grabbed his third win of the year knocking out defending Lucas Oil National Champion Frank Manzo with a lap of 5.830 seconds at 252.80 mph.  Martin used his semifinal run of 5.725 seconds at 253.18 seconds to qualify No. 1 in his Lane Automotive Dodge Funny Car.  Manzo looks to repeat as national champion with eight wins to his credit this year.

Four out of five of the remaining top qualifiers from Friday held on to their No. 1 spots.  Top Sportsman racer Tom Stultz was the lone racer to take over the top spot on Saturday with a pas of 6.811 seconds at 206.23 mph.  Stultz also took the win yesterday for the rain delayed event prior today’s qualifying and knocking local racer Mike Coughlin of Delaware, Ohio, to the No. 4 position for Sunday’s eliminations.

Holding on to the top spots were Bruno Massel in Comp Eliminator, Jeremy Duncan in Super Stock, Chuck Beach in Stock (also of Delaware, Ohio) and Tom Elliott in Top Dragster.

Racing continues Sunday at National Trail Raceway at 9 a.m.  Gates open at 8 a.m. and round one of Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car are set for 1 p.m.

Friday

HEBRON, Ohio. – In the first rounds of qualifying at National Trail Raceway and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Marty Thacker and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Mick Snyder took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes.

Thacker, of Robinson, Ill., outran the field with a pass of 5.482 seconds at 262.64 mph.  Thacker, who has a win and a runner-up finish already this year in the NHRA North Central Division, is followed by Ken Perry of Richmond Hill, Ont., CAN.  Perry clocked in at 5.498 seconds, 258.32 mph.

Snyder ran a 5.754 second lap at 249.95 mph in his No. 1 qualifying pass with Dan Wilkerson landing in the No. 2 position.

Also on tap this weekend is the conclusion of the B’Laster Cavalcade of Stars Lucas Oil event that was postponed due to rain at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio, back in May.  Eliminations for this rescheduled event will be run during Friday’s and Saturday’s qualifying and time trials for the National Trail Raceway event.   

Thacker and Perry will match up in a semifinal round on Saturday with Mike Kosky and Todd Datweiler in the other Top Alcohol Dragster semifinal pair for the rescheduled event.  In the funny car category, Snyder will take on Bobby Martin, fresh off a pair of wins last month, in one semifinal while Andy Bohl will face off against defending Lucas Oil National Champion Frank Manzo who has made the trip from N.J. for the completion of the rainout event but will not compete in the National Trail Raceway Lucas Oil event. 

Eliminations for the B’Laster Cavalcade of Stars were completed in all remaining categories with Jeffrey Brown taking out John Coughlin of Delaware, Ohio, in the final of Top Dragster.  Charlie Greco beat out Robert Bailey in Comp Eliminator.  Ricky Decker won in Super Stock and Kevin Zaskowski in Stock Eliminator.  In Top Sportsman it was Tom Stultz, Garry Fleenor was victorious in Super Comp, while Steve Eckard and Mark Cook took home the trophies in Super Gas and Super Street respectively.

Top qualifiers in other classes for the National Trail Raceway Lucas Oil event were local favorites Mike Coughlin (John’s brother) in Top Sportsman and Chuck Beach in Stock Eliminator.  The two Delaware, Ohio, racers are joined by Bruno Massel in Comp., Tom Elliott in Top Dragster, and Jeremy Duncan in Super Stock.  Coughlin advanced to the semifinal round in the rescheduled race before loosing to the event runner up Brinegar.

Racing continues Saturday at 9 a.m.  Gates open at 8 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars will make final qualifying runs at 1 and 5 p.m.  Tickets are $15 Saturday and $15 for Sunday.  Children 6-12 are just $5 each day and kids 5 and under are free.  For more information, call 740-928-5706 or visit www.nationaltrailraceway.com.

HEBRON, Ohio – National Trail Raceway will host the NHRA North Central division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, July 25-27.  The race is the fifth of six in the region and will feature drivers in eight categories, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, racing for valuable points leading to divisional and national championships.  The division’s Dart Top Sportsman Series and Spitzer Race Cars Top Dragster Series will also run in conjunction with the event.

Gates at National Trail Raceway open at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday and at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Qualifying and time trials start Friday at 9 a.m. and continue Saturday at 9 a.m. Top Dragster, Top Comp and Comp Eliminator will have one qualifying run on Friday, starting at 2:30 p.m.  They will have two qualifying passes on Saturday, starting at 11:30 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualifying is slated for 4 p.m. on Friday and 1 and 5 p.m. on Saturday.  Eliminations start Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m.  Opening ceremonies are scheduled at 12:30 p.m., to be followed by first round of eliminations for Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car at 1 p.m. 

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at National Trail Raceway are $10 Friday, $15 Saturday and $15 Sunday.  Children 6 to 12 years old are $5 each day and kids 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND: A $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2008 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

SPITZER RACE CARS LOW QUALIFIER BONUS: A $7,000 bonus fund from Spitzer Race Cars will pay low qualifiers in the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car classes $500 at each of the North Central division’s races where the categories are contested. There will also be a year-end bonus of $1,000 to be awarded to the driver in each class with the most points earned through qualifying position at each of the events.

 STEVE SCHMIDT RACING ENGINES LOW QUALIFIER BONUS: A $2,400 bonus fund from SSRE will pay the low qualifiers in the Top Sportsman and Top Dragster classes $200 at each of the North Central division’s six races.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA’s seven divisions will compete for a share of the $100,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2008 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series’ eight classes. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2008 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division’s team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $20,000 towing fund to get to the event.

This year, event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a “double up” bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2008 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

DART Top Sportsman Class: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Dart Top Sportsman class are vying for division championships and a share in the $3,200 event purse as well as points leading to a divisional championship. Top Sportsman racers may run the six North Central Division Lucas Oil events as well as three Lucas Oil Series races in other NHRA divisions that run the class.

The North Central Division Dart Top Sportsman year-end champion will earn $2,000, No. 2 points finisher will receive $1,000 and the third place competitor will earn $500.

SPITZER RACE CARS TOP DRAGSTER CLASS: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Spitzer Race Cars Top Dragster class are vying for division championships and a share in the $3,200 event purse as well as points leading to a divisional championship. Top Dragster racers may run the six North Central Division Lucas Oil events as well as three Lucas Oil Series races in other NHRA divisions that run the class.

The North Central Division Spitzer Race Cars Top Dragster year-end champion will earn $2,000, No. 2 points finisher will receive $1,000 and the third place competitor will earn $500.
